Raíces de lunares y zapatos de tacón / Roots of Polka-dots and High Heels

2016. Comfort Station Logan Square, Chicago.

With the collaboration of Patricia «La Tiranta» and Alejandro Sie

This performance disputes the feeling of homesickness and familiarity when people identify themselves with patterns that represent their country for the rest of the world, but really don’t belong to them. In this case the art of flamenco represents my country, but not my city, but not my home.

I was living in Chicago for five months. I didn ́t meet any Spaniards here, until the flamenco artists. When I saw them (singers and dancers) performing flamenco I felt like in a special home, because I “understand” this kind of art, and I found in it a family.

How strange is to yearn one’s country when one encounters the cultural stereotypes that represent a specific region, even if one is not directly related to it.
